    Great question!

I know that the first instinct is to say no, but it really depends on the situation.

I mean, if it is one of your friends, then yep, that is okay.

Anyone who says it isn't doesn't have any mentally disabled friends. Those people should be ashamed for pretending to know when they don't have any prior experience.

I got into it with one of my friends just last week. He was born with Down Syndrome. After a few minutes of petty argument he called me a retard. The two of us spend the next ten minutes laughing so hard we cried.

People with mental disabilities are still people. As long as they are adults, and capable of maintaining a conversation (or argument for that matter), they should be treated like any other adult. When people go out of their way to treat them specially, it makes them feel stupid. Which they aren't.

It's called dignity and class. Part of being a lady is knowing that one should conduct oneself in a manner that is respectful of oneself and those around.

    1. Please don't use the term "retarded". It's not very PC, and the correct term is "cognitively impaired".

    2. If a person is cognitively impaired, they may have a disorder, such at Tourette's Syndrome that may cause them to curse.

    3. The person may or may not have realized that what he or she was doing and the ramifications of those decisions.

I know you know the answer to this question. Do what you need to do to be a mature, respectful individual.

again i worked with MR/DD people for along time. You shouldnt do anything that escalates the situation. They have been in their situation heir whole lives. They can be bored, feel out of control of their own lives, and sometimes just want to shake things up. They may be MR but they know exactly what their doing. And if they win and make you angry, you really need to think to yourself first "why does someone with half my IQ have control over MY emotions?"

Ignore them. Its can be lot like how toddlers control their parents in the grocery store by throwing a temper tantrum, they have to try it several times before they give up, but eventually they do.

Most of the so called "retarded" people I've met are always happy, so no, if such a person was angry and swearing I would assume he had been treated very badly. I would not swear back.

You never know what disability a person has (maybe they have Tourette's syndrome and can't help themselves), so never think it would be correct to swear back at a disabled person. Show common courtesy and walk away.

Why the word retarded? how about learning or psychical disability. Shows how ignorant you are

  • 1 decade ago

No! But you should tell them not to talk that way to people because it is disrespectful and you should treat people as you would want to be treated. Unless maybe if someone is making fun of them...then they should be able to tell them" f#@k off!"

consider the source and admonish them anyway you may reach even the retarded sometimes.
