A TB test for tuberculosis is called a PPD. It is a little injection just under the skin to place a weal (small bump) of a solution that reacts if you have been exposed to TB. It should be "read" or re-examined 48-72 hours later by a professional to see if the spot has become raised or "indurated" meaning you may have been exposed to TB. There are false positive readings too, and you may have a chext X-ray after a positive test to confirm it.

The most commonly used TB test is the PPD (purified protein derivative) which is inject into the skin (that is a intradermal injection and not under the skin which is a sub cutaneous injection). Then in 48 - 72 hours it is read. If your body reacted to the PPD then that proves that you have been exxposed to TB sometime in the past, conversely if there is no reaction then you have not been exposed to TB.

This test can also be positive in people who have had the BCG vaccine against TB, however that vaccine is not used in the US, so this applies to people that grew up overseas.

This PPD test is not a definitive diagnostic test for TB but is the initial screening test.

Baby Kimah... this is not a vaccine.

Its a skin test for tuberculosis. A vaccine is injected under your skin which initally forms a lumb that should go down. 2 days later you must go back and have that test read. The surface of the skin where you were injected is examined to see if a red bump has formed. If you do not go back in 48 hours, you will have to be retested.

Source(s): I just started working for a hospital and I went through this procedure.
