In a submarine it depends more on the food supply. The question is breathe under water not hold your breathe. Scubba gear, and submarines are under water.

You can't breathe under water very long, since humans don't have gills. (I assume you're askig about humans)

If you tried inhaling water like some people do while drowning, it would not keep you alive any longer than if you held your breath while under water. And if, and when, they pulled you out, they would then have to get the water out of your lungs in order to revive you.

We can live for a few minutes without oxygen, this depends on the individual and the temperature of the water. This determines how long a person can survive a near-drowning.

If you mean with underwater breathing apparatus such as a snorkel or scuba, you could breathe under water indefinitely, as long as your equipement holds out.

If you're not asking about humans, that would depend on the species. fish "breathe" under water indefinitely. Amphibians do it after a fashion, also. Creatures with lungs such as mammals and reptiles and humans can't breathe under water without ill effects. Then it's called aspirating water, and it's not good.

PS this isn't a math question, it's a biology question. If you want more precice information as to how long we can survive without oxygen, under varying conditions, or how long we can stay under water using apparatus, ask the biology nerds over there. We're math nerds here.

you can not breathe under water for any length of time unless you have scuba gear, or a long straw (i.e., snorkel), or some other air supply. as to how long you can hold your breath, that depends on your conditioning. I believe the world record is about 7 minutes.

You cannot breath under water. All you can do is hold your breathing for a while (the time this is possible depends on each person and can be improved with proper training) and... hope to get to surface fast enough. ;-)

I believe the answer is ZERO. No human can breath underwater. Some can hold their breath for long periods of time.

ON the T.V. this guy held his breath under for 6 min and 38 sec. it was weird. I can hold my breath for about 2 min.

Using scuba gear would be my guess. There have been experiments on rodents that could breathe a liquid, but it wasn't water.

You can't breath underwater, you can only hold your breath. 5 minutes is the average...if you don't pass out first.
