Why is it OK for hockey players to hit each other, but when basketball players do that, they are called thugs?

They are wearing helmets when they begin hitting each other. The refs stop it when the helmets come off. It's still a foul.

Hockey is a contact sport, basketball is not.

Source(s): In the National Hockey League, American Hockey League, ECHL, CHL, and other notable minor leagues, officials punish combatants with five-minute major penalties for fighting (hence the phrase "five for fighting") and sometimes more if a combatant is injured during the fight. A player is automatically ejected and suspended if the player tries to leave the bench to join a fight, and is also automatically ejected for using weapons of any kind (such as using a skate to kick an opponent, using a stick to hit an opponent, or wrapping tape around one's hands), as they can cause serious injury. A player who receives two instigator penalties in one game is also ejected automatically. Furthermore, his coach can be suspended up to ten games for allowing players to leave the bench to join a fight.

    Several things -

    1) It isn't OK, it's just commonly accepted because hitting, fighting, tackling, etc. are all part of hockey. It still is a major penalty and often leads to ejections, however, in hockey. Also, if it happens often enough with the same people, they do get suspended.

    2) Hockey players have safety equipment because of said traditions in hockey.

    3) No one in America cares about hockey anyway, it is viewed as a Canadian/Euro sport. When people from other countries see basketball(viewed as American) players fighting, they label the country as thugs. That's not a good perception!

    Hope this Helps.

Hockey actually has fights. basketball is more like grown men slapping eachother. You can't sell basketball fights because they are so pathetic. Worse, they all have this "thug" immage, and when a fight actually happens, it destroys it. Just look at C. Anthony.. people use to think he was tough, now they just laugh. Even the softest of hockey players would hand the toughest of basketball players there ***, because there just aren't very many REAL tough guys playing basketball. Period.

Let me answer by asking another question. Has the NHL ever had to institute a dress code for its players because they LOOKED like thugs. The answer is NO. Hockey is a physical sport just like football. Elite players need to be protected. When a football fight breaks out we don't call them thugs do we? Last time I checked the NFL had plenty of black players. It's the physical nature of the sport. not racism.

Hockey is a faster sport. It is meant to be physical, the players wear protective equipment.

Basketball is supposed to be non-contact.

    Personally basketball portrays thugs.

I have met many pro-hockey players, although I am not a sports fan, I must admit, they were very nice, friendly people.
