look, if we look both of them togeather, mp3 and mp4!!

    mp3:MPEG-LAYER 3

    mp4:MPEG4

MP3 is a international audio formation!!

mp4 can be an audio or a video depnding on the file extensions like .mp4 , .m4u , etc.

there is a mp4 video file which QuickTime Player can play and this is commonly used in new mobile phones

there is also a mp4 audio file or AAC (Advance Audio Coding) whick is better than mp3 cause it has a small kbps but has a higher quality than mp3's example AAC 128 kbps (high quality) for mp3 128 kbps (good quality)

itunes can convert mp3 files to mp4 audio files (or AAC) so just read the itunes manual to kow how to convert the files

.mp4 is just the file extension; it can be video or audio, but also can be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images. If you're converting it for iPod reasons, you can just add the file to your iTunes library and it automatically converts it to MPEG-4 (mp4) audio file.
