Why are plus-sized models called this?

In general, plus-sized models are actually average sized women and teenage girls. I myself would more than likely qualify as a "plus-sized" model even though I am in no way "fat" and am roughly the same size as most of the girls in my class....at least the ones who eat anyway....

I think they should call "normal" sized models Anorexic-sized models or Underweight models or something....

When one hears the term plus-sized you usually think of women who wear actuall plus sized clothing and are actually somewhat overweight......So why is this term used in modeling?

Update:

Uhmm Jeff..yeah you down there buddy. How bout you look at Tyra Banks for me huh? She is classified by some as a Plus sized model, but you CAN NOT even come clost to telling me that she is overweight.

And for your information I have a BMI of 24.5...which is pretty dang normal if you ask me, however most "normal" models have a BMI of under 15.

This is a classic connotation vs. denotation.

If I say the word "fat", you get an image in your mind.

If i say "plus-size", a different vision emerges.

Society is trying to destigmatize "fat" and not insult people with labels

I think that they call it that because of the size of the clothes. (I know that sounds stupid but read on...) A lot of larger breasted women have to wear plus size because "regular" size clothes won't keep there boobs in... That has nothing to do with being over weight just well endowed, I guess! So if you are anything above a size 14 you are plus. I know that sounds sucky but the pop culture still wants to believe that we are all barbies and fit a size 3 ever day. On an up note I know that alot of stores are no longer calling larger sizes plus, now they are calling them women's sizes and smaller sizes are miss's sizes so maybe soon that termanology will become common in the modeling world as well!!

Because the stick figures are still lokked at as the normal girl, its whats wrong with the world if you ask me, I dont ever even see a modle that is the average weight, although Tyra Banks was told to lose weight when she was modeling and she refused to stating that if she has curves, so do thousands of other woman

And JEFF I have a bone to pick with you too, you tell me ONE supermodle who is a size 9, that is in totadys veiw a PLUS SIZE model even though someone of that size is generally lean, their ribs dont stick out, they need to be 8 sizes smaller to be considered skinny by the MODEL criteria! Thats why she asked this question!

i dunno why but a saw a girl who was the same body as me and she was on the plus size model its just disgraceful no wonder there are so many people out there who are cutting them selves or not eating. Everyone should be known as who they are and not what they look like. Besides those So called "normal" models just make everyone feel bad about them self. No wonder why half the people in this world have such low self esteem... and modelings just a bunch of crap with fake looking stick people that never exist. Trya banks is beautiful and has the same type of body i have (except my thighs) she should be considered normal she aint no plus size atleast she has curves and boobs when those sticks just look like boys with long hair

I agree with you. It seems like the modeling industry deals with about 2% of the population when it comes to the style and sizes of their clothing. It just doesn't make sense. I guess it is a different world.

You are right. Pretty much anytime a model has curves, she is considered plus sized.

What they want is a 5'9 to 5'11 boy with breasts (no hips) to advertise their clothes. Tyra actually looks healthy and doesn't fit the clothes hangers they usually like.

I totally agree with you. I think that the modeling industry calls these girls plus-sized because they're not your typical model. If they aren't smaller than a size 5, they're basically fat. That my friend, is what I call putting too much pressure on young girls.

You're wrong. You're in denial. Plus-sized models are overweight, but pretty, and are advertising large clothes for large women. I'll bet you don't fit into the weight/height chart, either, and just conveniently ignore that fact. WAKE UP! You are not a size 9 any more, and while you're probably a very sweet person, the people around you do notice!

Plus is used in replacement of the term 'larger'. It is supposed to be more polite, and less offensive. I don't know about you but plus-sized models doesn't seem quite as bad as large-sized models.

  • Plus-sized models are called "plus-sized models" because they actually have positive sizes. The so-called normal models don't are negative sizes or less than 0, therefore anyone that is a normal (and positive) size is a "plus-sized model" - ex "normal" model = >0, "plus-sized" model = <0
