I'm jewish by religion, and I know the motion you mean, and do the same at least during some prayers.

in a way you could say its like a form of mini-bow, but that doesn't really cover it.

honestly besides the bowing part(to god...) I have no idea. it just kinda comes naturally.

maybe its a form of intensity? remember in Judaism at least, theres no mediator... you are praying DIRECTLY to god... some of the most important prayers are basically directly communing with God.

Islam got here alongside around 600 to 630 advert. Muhammad have been given the assumption from watching the Jews of their act of prayer (the rocking action), something the Jews have achieved for some thousand years. I forgotten what the be conscious is for the rocking action, yet in actuality many cases of worship modes of the Jews have been copied via Muhammad besides as praying in direction of Mecca. basically interior the Jewish occasion, they prayed in direction of Jerusalem - in direction of Solomon's Temple as in line with what Solomon mentioned in his dedication of the Temple he equipped to honor God. Islam additionally borrowed from Christianity some components yet in addition went a step added in distorting what became written to verify Muhammad's new custom faith.

I believe that Jews do it so that they are not only praying with their mind and spirit, but also with their bodies. It is a way to put more of onesself into one's prayers.

They're chuckling to themselves (at least some religions have a sense of humor, not like some other mirthless, spirit draining religions I could name).

It has to do with "Being in spirit". It can just be a practiced habit or it can be lost in spiritual unity with God.
