It allows a layered approach to networking with the feature of allowing different vendors to inter-operate without each establishing their own set of communication protocols.

OSI model is the basic building blocks that allows users to communicate transparently. That is, you type a question and post it here. What you don't see are all the steps; software programs, protocols, and hardware used to achieve this result. Knowing the seven layers of the OSI model helps to determine at which level problems may occur or where improvements can be made. These are a set of regulated (agreed on specifications) for the development of computer communications. As the user you see only the text area where you type the message and read the message on your Web Browser. What you don't see are the layers that add certain protocols to the message and the layers that are responsible for the transfer of the data to the Physical layer (the network hardware). Knowing all this helps us to design and maintain the communications system.
