How do I make my laptop wirelessly connect to the internet? I just installed a router on my pc.?
I got a new laptop, and I am trying to make it wireless. I went to radioshack and bought a router and installed it, and now I still can't connect to the internet on my laptop. What do I need to do?

after you set up your router go to your network connections, select wireless network connection, Right Click it Then Select View Available Wireless Connections, Select The Account, You Wish to Connect To Then Click Connect, If Your Cant View Your Available Wireless Connections, Use The Software That Come With Your Router, if it came with it.

you did not mention if the laptop actually has wireless capability, but assuming it does...
one tip: if the router is a linksys router, it will default to naming your network linksys, and the only name that a linksys router will not allow is, you guessed it, linksys, so you may need to change the routers name.
Next thing, make sure both the router and laptop are using the same security settings, if the router is set to secure mode, you will need to use the same mode, and know the key the router expects to see.
You also have to be close enough. The laptop will recieve the signal as far away as 200 or sometimes even as much as 300 yards, depending on the weather, walls and things in between, and so on (its like any other radio signal and can be blocked or interfered with, imagine its kinda like the remote control on your TV, you know you can;t use the remote from your neighbor's house... its not that bad, but still its kind of the same, better yet, think of it as a cordless (not a wireless cell phone, a cordless regualr phone) yopu have to be close enough to the base for the handset to pick up the signal)
Once you are sure all the settings match on the router and the laptop, you should be able to connect. In win XP you just go to connections and you should see an entry in the list with the name you gave your router when you set it up, select it and click connect.
One more thing, you may need to enable internet connection sharing on the desktop, depending on how you have the router connected. If the router is connected directly to your internet source (cable or DSL moden or etc) you shouldn't need this, but if the internet signal is going through the desktop then to the router (not the best way to set it up...) you might need to have internet connection sharing set.

I am assuming that you already have the wireless router's internet port connected to your DSL modem's ethernet port, if not, do this first. Since most laptops nowadays are wifi capable, I would assume that your laptop can also do wireless networking. Make sure that you have enabled this in the laptop by going to the network control panel, wireless setting and clicking on the wirelss adapter. If not, kindly do so assuming you are using Windows XP.
You then need to enable the wireless capability of your router. Most normally comes with a setup CD to do the initial setup. Otherwise, you can try your PCs browser to go to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 where the web administration panel of the router can be accessed as most wireless routers do. If a linksys router is used, it normally has admin as the username and admin as the default password to logon. I strongly suggest to replace the admin password once you have configured your router to prevent it from being modified by someone else.

Do you have a wireless network card? If not do you have an internal network card? Plug a network cable from your laptop to your router.
Your new laptop should find and set up your network card. If it doesnt then read the instructions and use the set up disk that came with your router.
