it's based on point differential(points scored minus points allowed) if two or more teams have the same record. whoever has the highest number goes and the other doesn't. i know it's disappointing. it happened to my broncos.

Yeoldvillageidiot is correct, even though they had the same overall record (8-8) and same conference record (7-5), the deciding factor, if you've watched any ESPN SportsCenter today, is that the "strength of victory" (step 4) was what determined the Giants went over the Packers.

Basically, for the Packers to be the wild card over the Giants, they needed 5 teams to win (Arizona over San Diego, Detroit over Dallas, Miami over Indianapolis, Minnesota over St. Louis, and San Francisco over Denver) and 3 to lose (Carolina to New Orleans, Houston to Cleveland, and Tampa Bay to Seattle) in exactly that way in order to win the strength of victory. So it was a pretty good chance that they weren't making it if they were relying on Arizona, Detroit and Miami to win games (even though Detroit did shock Chicago).

    From the NFL.com website:

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

    1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.

    2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

    Two Clubs

    1. Head-to-head, if applicable.

    2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

    3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.

    4. Strength of victory.

    5. Strength of schedule.

    6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.

    7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.

    8. Best net points in conference games.

    9. Best net points in all games.

    10. Best net touchdowns in all games.

    11. Coin toss.

I am guessing that the Giants won the tiebreaker on step 3 or step 4.

The Giants played harder teams throughout the season (strength of Schedule)
