this is commonly knowing in the Dakota community. the 3.9 v-6 gets the same mileage as the 5.2 and 4.7 v-8. its why alot of guys that owns the v-6 version. says I could of had a V-8 lol. nothing you can really do. why everyone gets fooled in to thinking its a v-6 should get better MPG vs the V-8. think it has to do more with the weight of the vehicle.
people has gotten a lil better better MPG by putting synthetic fluids in the tranny and differentials and transfer case. but it was only like 1 to 2 MPG at best. so not worth the price of syn.
forgot to add have your 02 sensors checked also. if you have a check engine light on. get the code checked at auto zone. they will check it for free and tell you whats wrong.
like said earlier get your cat checked also it would be clogged but I bet one of your 02 sensors might be bad.
also not a bad idea to pull your Throttle Body off and give it a good cleaning. make sure to use TB cleaner and pull off your IAC and clean that too. also remove the throttle body positioning sensor. so you dotn damage it when cleaning. while your TB is off look in to your intake and see if you see alot of oil. if you do then your belly pan gasket is blown.
go here if need any further help www.dakota-durango.com. lot of knowlagable people that can help you further. where I hang out to learn about my 03 dakota.
just a few things that might help get your mileage up a lil.

Take the truck out of 4WD. Just kidding. Depending on the 4WD option that you have your front hubs might still be engaged backup 50 feet in a straight line to disengage the hubs. Most people forget this step when using 4WD. It also depends on how you drive. If you have a lead foot your gas mileage is going to suffer, if you do a lot of driving in town "stop and go" your gas mileage is going to be low also. Get some Carb and injector cleaner and dump in the gas tank, the fuel injectors might be clogged also.

Dodge trucks with the V-6 are notorious for poor fuel economy, about the worst of the lot, followed closely by the Chevy's with the 4.3 V-6, and there really isn't anything you can do to help. If you want to drive it you gotta pay :(Source(s): BTDT ;)

How bad is it? Most of these trucks only get about 15mpg. If it's a lot less than that, you may have a clogged catalytic converter. Dodges are not known for efficiency, so you may just want to trade it in.

Not much you can do for a Dodge on gas mileage. i have one and have tried numerous things. like cold air intake, low restriction exhaust, throttle body spacer, tonue bed cover, etc...
They all haven"t really helped out.. for my Dodge that is..Source(s): Owner of a Dodge
