How come they can have women only colleges, but not men only colleges?

Well maybe I need empowerment?

The short answer is either public policy or economics.

There are probably still a few all male colleges around.

Most colleges that were all male became coeducational for one of two reasons:

    1. They were public universities and could no longer get funding if they continued to exclude women.

    2. They were private universities and found that if they allowed women, it would increase both their enrollment and the average quality of their students. The first brings in more money because there are more students. The second brings in more money because the school goes up in the rankings.

You will find that women's colleges avoid the first point, because they are private. Some avoid the second because there are still enough women who would like to attend an all women's college -- and a lot of their competitors have either shut down, merged with a men's school or are now admitting men. This makes it viable for the better women's schools to remain all women.

In the past there were lots of male-only colleges, but when a lot ofthe top men's colleges started to admit women, the ones that were all men started tohave some problems. Let's face it, most guys do NOT want to go to school with all guys if they can choose an equally prestigious school that has women, I actually knew several guys that transferred from Ivy league schools to some of the famous all-women's schools in the first years that they started to admit men. hahaha!

One pressure group that influenced the decision to admit women to formerly all-male colleges was the alumni who wanted their daughters to go to their prestigious old schools!

Same way there's the "United ***** College Fund" but there'd be another Civil War if someone tried to initiate a "United Caucasian College Fund", or a NAACP for whites, etc., etc.

Because life in the US just ain't fair, honey!
