People celebrate New Year when it is midnight in their own time zone. They have already celebrated in Australia, Gibraltar, the UK, etc. We will celebrate here eastern Canada in 2 hours and 25 minutes, before the rest of North America.

What kind iof nonsense is this?

Midnight local time is when local people will mark the beginning of the new year.

In Australia, China, and other far east locations, midnight has passed, and people have drank their champagne toast, kissed their girl and went to bed already. It may not even be dark yet in California. (7:00 PM central time-ish)
