When you do a crunch is it better to flex your abs or relax and just do the motions?

When you crunch, try to suck your lower abs in towards your spine, and exhale when you crunch, inhaling when you relax back down.Source(s): Certified Personal Trainer

I fyou're not flexing your abs, your not crunching. Unless your in training for a specific activity that requires development of a specific type of muscle fiber, it's Best to crunch up, hold and squeeze, then come down slow.
