When you crunch, try to suck your lower abs in towards your spine, and exhale when you crunch, inhaling when you relax back down.

I fyou're not flexing your abs, your not crunching. Unless your in training for a specific activity that requires development of a specific type of muscle fiber, it's Best to crunch up, hold and squeeze, then come down slow.
