IF theocracies ruled the world, which countries would be safer for atheists? Muslim ones, or Christian ones?

Neither. We have all seen what both religions are capable of with enough power and money. Ask yourself if you would like to be beheaded, or totured and then burned at the stake?

    Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Source(s): If it's any help, I lived in Iran for 13 years, in a Theocracy. I was and still am an atheist/agnostic, and had no problems with Muslims not accepting my religious beliefs. I would gladly go back there today, even with tensions as high as they are, because there people are just like us, people. With good hearts and minds. Just because our governments disagree, that does not mean every American atheist is killed upon arrival. The assertion that Muslims will kill you if you do not convert is asinine. This view is popularized by the Christian religious right in America, and couldn't be further from the truth.

Either. Historically, the Byzantine Empire was one of the most prominant Christian theocracies, but heresey and paganism were actually tolerated. Teachers taught astrology and pagan philosophy in public schools. Christian bishops actually took a pagan philosopher with them to the council of Ferrara-Florence in the 15th century. This guy was a staunch anti-Christian, and wrote several works against the Christian faith. After his death, his anti-Christian writings were preserved in the library at Constantinople. Most, if not all, of our knowledge of Greco-Roman pagan philosophy was preserved by Christian theocrasies. Even in the dreaded inquisition, non-Christians were officially exempt from persecution (although that rule was not always observed).

In Islamic societies, non-Muslims were traditionally exempt from Islamic law, and were allowed to observe their own laws and governmental structures. When Muslims conquered Christian nations, they usually plastered over Christian icons, rather than destroying them.

I'd rather live in Sweden or Norway. Seems those places have less religions in the public eye than other countries do. And Norway looks like an awesome place to live =D

It depends on which branch of each religion is in charge. In the middle ages, when the Roman Catholics ruled a large part of Europe, it was unsafe to be an apostate. However, if the Unitarians got a chunk of territory, we'd be in great shape there.

We Christians love you. If you go to a Muslim country and you will not convert to Islam they'll kill you.

Please stay in America with Christians. Remember we protested against the Catholic Church who had the Pope who ran the Crusades who killed Jews, Christians and Atheists who would not convert to Catholicism.

The Protestant Christians love you. We will not give up trying to get you to know our Jesus. So you'll have to put up with us bugging you, but we do it in love.

I would say you would be safer with the Christians since the Muslims believe in killing the infidels.

Christian. Of that I have no doubt. In many Islamic countries atheism is a crime punishable by death.

Neither option is preferable to secular democracy which guarantees freedom of faith and conscience for all.

Neither. The buddhist ones would be safest, because their religions are based on respect for others.

Christian ones. While Christians may annoy you by trying to get you to see things their way, they do not believe in force conversion as do many Muslim countries.

Atheists are neither Muslim or christian.

We do not believe in ANY religion.

    We believe in God

    We believe religion divides people

We believe most religions exist ONLY to make money.
