It's very easy for people outside of the military to paint a picture of discontent within the ranks, especially reporters, or persons whom have never served, and are looking to stir the emotions of the left.

To maximize the significance of this story is ignorance. Read it carefully paying particular attention to some of the numbers quoted regarding AWOL statistics and such. In reality The United States Military has experienced higher AWOL rates during peacetime years since Vietnam, then in the years during Iraq.

The United States military is not about to collapse in chaos based on a few disgruntled people.

One can manipulate things to appear worse than they are and a few people are generally more than willing to jump on the band wagon, to preach doom and gloom.

Take for example that there has been an death rate of about 60 deaths per every 100,000 soldiers in Iraq in the last 2 years.

The firearms death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 population for the same two year period.

This means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington, and the citizens of our nations capital would be safer enlisted in our military serving in Iraq.

But alas, I don't see any reporters manipulating this story yet. Nor, do I think you will take that and run with it all over the internet fearing for the good people of D.C.

It's interesting to look at the previous questions and answers of people posting this type of question. Which isn’t really a question, rather a statement as has been most everything they have posted on Yahoo Answers that is merely aimed at inciting rage towards their eternal scapegoat, That being Bush in this case.

Hopefully the mental health community will have a label to stamp on this type of illness real soon, that way we can develop a program for these people to get some help at the expense of the American taxpayer.

The only ones that are going to give a rats *** about the petition is the media and antiwar folks. So you are celebrating that members of our military are using ignorant high school tactics? When our troops have the whole picture and not just the military ramifications but political too then credence may be given. But they are not given much of a picture at all except of what is in front of them. If this was 1000 Sr. Military Officers then I would listen to what they have to say.

I support our troops, I'm a veteran. I don't support childish attention grabbing bull crap such as this.

I too am a veteran, & would venture a guess that you are not.... I was not a supporter of the war when it began, I thought it was too early in the situation for us to commit the lives & resources required if we could resolve the issue thru diplomacy. Even then it appeared to be Vietnam in the desert....a conflict that was unwinnable by conventional military tactics.

However, just because I oppose the war, I don't support the enemy! I DO support our troops & our President!! If he felt the time wad right so be it......the fighting men & women that defend our freedom don't get a vote on when we go to war....except on election day . just like the rest of us.

The Constitution guarantees the right to petition the government, soldiers take an oath to support and defend the Constitution.

Regardless of whether their using a petition as their forum, this is not a new concept; just being used by those such as you to try to make a mountain out of a molehill.

I think those in the military that feel this way after volunteering should be sent to the front lines where they'd do the most good. 007 and Leogirl hit it right on.

they should be tried for treason placed in front of the firing squad and shot then it would be "the last time in history". If they would have done that to Hanoi Jane then we wouldn't have to listen to liberal cowards like Sean Penn.
