There are pictures of Cheney and Saddam shaking hands and smiling when he was our ally. But fickle american govt tends to support many horrible dictatorships, like pinochet, we helped him overthrow a democratically elected president, much like we are trying to do apparently in Venezuela even though the marxist leaning president there was democratically elected. We like to say we support democracy, but only when it is in our interest. Our leadership says we support Israel because it is the only democracy in the middle east, yet more than 50% of its citizens are prohibited from voting--you must be jewish to vote, the palestinian citizens, who have israeli citizenship, cannot participate.

No, the lesser of two evils. That's how it works in the really real world where bad men don't vanish just because you ignore tham.

no, but the US administration does not support people because they are good guys. they support those who can help further the US cause (as does every other government). this is the reality.

I don't think he was ever a good guy, but he hadn't shown his true colors to the world yet.

As Truman said of Batista "He's a bastard, but he's OUR bastard."
Supporting bastards ALWAYS gets the US in trouble, yet the US govt does it again and again, and is still doing it now.

The enemy of our enemy is our friend.
Source(s): As I recall the reason we backed Saddam with his war with Iran, had something to do with Americans being held hostage in Iran for 444 days. - Anonymous1 decade ago
