    One who goes by the "scripta" rather than the "spiritu" of the Book; whatever "Religious" Scripture it may be.

    In addition to some excellent responses above it should be noted that not

    all fundamentalists are extreme.

    It is the extremist that, in my opinion, should be cause for worry.

    This would include those

    who work to establish a Bible based Theocracy, those who withold lifesaving medical treatment from children & those who cannot accept

    living with other religions

    or non believers to mention some.

    One meaning the dictionary gives is "one who is immovable from his beliefs."

    To be a fundamentalist means you are committed to the fundamentals.

    Today, the meaning of the term "fundamentalist" has undergone a change in meaning. It is typically used as a term of derision by those who hold in contempt those who believe in the concept of absolute truth.

    it is "a fundamentalist" and it is someone with an extreme view (usually religious) that differs from the mainstream.
