(18+) Lord of The Rings question?

Were they smoking you know what when they were smoking the pipe. I mean they smoke the pipe to relax after a stressful event, contemplate and celebrate after an achievement. Do you think that J.R.R. Tolkein meant it to be like that. What do you think? Is it that ridiculous?

Pipe-weed (also known as Halflings' Leaf) is, in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, a strain of tobacco developed by the Hobbits of the Shire, the production of which is a major industry there, especially in the south. Among the Dúnedain it is known as sweet galenas, and in Gondor it grows as a wild plant, appreciated primarily for its sweet-scented flowers.

In Gondor it is known popularly as westmansweed, a reference to its origin: it was apparently brought to Middle-earth by Númenóreans during the Second Age. It was first grown among Hobbits by Tobold Hornblower in Longbottom (a region in the Shire) around S.R. 1070 (T.A. 2670). Despite its foreign origins, the Hobbits (possibly those in Bree) were the first to use it for smoking.

Popular varieties of pipe-weed include Longbottom Leaf, Old Toby, and Southern Star.

In the prologue to The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien states specifically that "it is a strain of the herb nicotiana", i.e. tobacco. During the 1960s, Tolkien fans among the counterculture began thinking that the use of "weed" and "leaf" to refer to pipe-weed and statements that implied that pipe-weed "dulled the mind" meant that it was actually marijuana; Tolkien vehemently rejected this claim.

No, they were smoking pipe-weed, which is an old term for tobacco.

Smoking a pipe to relax is no different than smoking a cigarette to relax. Tobacco is tobacco- it all contains nicotine, which is addictive, no matter how it's smoked.

J.R.R.T lived in a time when they use to think smoking was good for health & a time-pass.
