What are J2SE Runtime Environment updates and why do I need them installed on my PC?

I have hundreds of megabytes being used on my hard drive because of these J2SE updates (Ranging from update 2 - update 10) and I have no idea what these applications are doing for my system. Can somebody let me know if it's safe to uninstall these things???

They enable Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to run on your box.

If you remove them you won't be able to run Java.

If that doesn't matter to you go ahead and blow them away.
