There's a program out there called RAM Booster. Try searching for it in a search engine.

Of course, nothing is better than the real thing, but there are some ways to free up some memory. This can get a little complicated and deep understanding what you need running in the background.

But, if you go to Start | Run and type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab. This lists all your programs that load up upon Windows bootup, such as antivirus programs, firewall programs, quicktime applets, etc.

There are some programs that nice-to-have's and some that you need. For example, you probably want to have your volume control, firewall and antivirus be always running. But, you might have Quicktime and Musicmatch running. These programs can be disabled. Of course, this is a short term solution.

If you have WinXP, you should have 512MB minimum, but optimal is 1GB for general usage. If you are a gamer, then go higher.

You can use some of the disk space on your computer as "virtual memory." This is commonly referred as "swap." Typically this is set to about 2-3 times of the actual physical memory on your computer, but you can set it higher, say 3-5x of physical memory if you simply need more.

Another thing you can do is to make sure only the essential programs are running, thus minimize unnecessary memory usage.

I'd visit a trusted computer news website's DOWNLOAD section and filter out FREEware of any program "increasing RAM" and seeing what the results are. Just as there are tons of registered programs, there are even more FREEWARE ones that work just as good---and in a few cases, better.

Sorry Megan .... you gonna hafta part with some bucks to upgrade your memory .... nuffin else for it

Though you could try deleting any old programs that you no longer use and do a system defrag ... but I don't think that's going to give you the kick you're looking for

no, not relay, you can adjust some virtual memory settings but I dought that will help you. If you relay mean storage not memory (hard disk space not RAM) then you can remove unwanted programs and burn things to CD to free space (the price of CD's they hardly count as having to buy anything)

Yes, you can increase your Windows paging file, which uses hard drive space as though it were RAM. Here's a link that explains it, sorry if it's a little too geeky:
