One of the biggest moves in the progressive era was Ford's introduction of the Model T. It was mass-produced using Ford's own assembly line, and was affordable to most working folks. The biggest problems automobiles faced were safety-related. The invention of laminated 'safety' glass was a huge break through as was the invention of the seat belt.
