What Camera Should I Buy?
I'm thinking about buying either a Nikon Coolpix P4 or a Canon Powershot A710. Can I get any recommendations or suggestions?

Both are good cameras but I prefer A710. it has better zoom and larger lens.

Between the two, the Canon 710 is the clearly superior camera.

It's not the only good camera out there, but an excellent all-around choice.
The previous poster who mentioned the panasonics has a good thought as well. They've got great lenses (by Leica) and 28mm wide angle lenses on their FX series. The downside to the panasonics is that they're best in good light. When it gets dark, their sensors get noisy at high ISO. If you want a compact camera that's good for indoor social shots, nothing will beat the Fuji's: f20, F30, F31fd.

What is the purpose of the camera for?
I highly recommend Panasonic Lumix Cameras
Why?
Because it has a Intelligent Image Stabilizer,
Optical Image Stabilizer (Some camera have, But Lumix is overall best)
MEGA O.I.S
Specially, this camera has 28mm wide-angle lens
(Most camera has 35mm angle lens)
Check the link:
http://panasonic.co.jp/pavc/global/lumix/lx2/index...
And Lumix cameras can take NATIVE 16:9 wide shots unlike the other cameras claiming.
