Promotion of equality. Naturally he couldn't promote that. He presided over the continuing growth of feudalism in which men contracted among them to commend themselves to greater men (lords) who could grant land (fiefs) to the holders (vassals) who would pledge homage, fealty (loyalty), support in legal actions, and military service in return for protection and loyalty.
Administration, promotion of learning and military might were his strong points. In learning, people speak of a Carolingian renaissance.
