What should it take to be an American citizen?

As a resident of Southern California, I see a lot of illegal immigration. However, the kind of immigration that bothers me the most is the practice of having "anchor babies". That is what happens when pregnant women run across the border and have their baby in the U.S., therefore they get to stay because their child is now considered a citizen, plus they get access to all sorts of free public aid.

I read somewhere that the government is considering changing the rules of citizenship, and I was hoping to see what you folks think about this:

What if we change the rules of citizenship here to be not that you are just born here, but instead, one of your parents must be a citizen in order to have citizenship from childhood. Otherwise you become eligible for citizenship after the age of 18. This would help lessen the financial drain that anchor children have on our economy in the border states.

Do you think this would be fair?

good idea. i think the child should not be a citizen automatically. the parents should go back to where they are from and raise their chil there. however they can apply and wait in line like every normal human does.

That is an excellent idea. Also, the immigration test must in English because speaking English fluently will be a requisite to become a American citizen, there allegiance must be to American Flag, (don't be bringing your flag with you and singing our National Anthem in Spanish or any other language) and they have respect for this country, our laws and our culture.

I dont believe an anchor baby has any right to be an American,to be an American means that we respect the fact that our forefathers fought to give Americans freedoms that illegals dont respect, means our families fought for our country, and are still fighting for our country,to truly be an American means you respect Americas laws and stand up for what is right, give to the less fortunate<whitch some are taking for granted> and salute our Flag and thank God every day for his blessings

II like the idea but we are late in the game.

WE always hear this or that. If someone were to attack us, we'd hear about it after the button for the nuke had been pushed. At this point, too many Americans are getting fat off the illegals being here. All we can do is hope they don't time it wrong. To me as a lay guy, It looks like it is over but what do I know. They never ask we what I know at tax time. They just take my money.

I would also like for civic understanding and contribution to be required to be a citizen think like Starship troopers...you don't just get to be a citizen you need to show that you are someone we want through some kind of societal contribution.

yes i think it would except in the case of military children also i think that if someone wants to be a legal U.S. citizen they should have to pass a test to see if they are completely fluent in the English language
