Why is it hard for religion to accept that evolution has occurred?

First, I am a Christian.

Why is it so hard for Christians to accept that evolution of life has occurred? How doe this not fit with the Bible? Why can't God have created life, and it evolved over time? Is it really that hard to understand that the men writing the Bible lacked the scientific concepts to explain it properly? The evidence of evolution exists all around us. Evolution doesn't have to mean that God doesn't exist. There are passages in the Bible that indicate that time doesn't exist for God the same way as it does for us. It just means that when the story of Adam & Eve took place it happened long after Creation happened. If God created everything, he created evolution and everything we find in the earth and in the heavens too.

Yes, there are some that point to evolution as a reason to abolish religion, but maybe that's all they have wrong. God gave us reason too, let's use it.

Update:

Bible does not say "present" image.

Biblical literalists control the masses by telling them what the Bible says to do because the 5th edition of the English (King James) Bible is the "true word of God". If page 1 is demonstated to be allegory it would have a dire impact on the followers -- thought.

First off, evolution is still a theory, not a fact. Secondly, no matter how you look at it Evolution contradicts the Genesis account. As a Christian you would agree that the Bible was written by men but inspired by God. If evolution indeed took place and was part of God's process in creating men then I'm sure He (God) would have found a way to convey this in the scriptures for us to understand even though Moses, who wrote Genesis, was "lacking scientific concepts".

I have always felt that, if there were a god, he would have created man in his image by molding and sculpting it through evolution over billions of years. He would have started at the very beginning and slowly advanced each creature into what it is today. He might not even be done. We could still be in the 6th day and God is still waiting to rest. I think you could even take the Bible literally and accept this view as there is not enough detail to exclude it.

But then, I don't believe there was a creator, so maybe it's easier for me to discard the conservative translations of the Bible.

It seems to me it is much harder for evolution to accept that religion has occurred. Lets face it evolution just does not jive with the Holy Bible. You say man who wrote the bible didn't have the scientific knowledge to tell it right. But that don't correlate with the fact that the Bible is the word of God surely he could have described his own creation right. You have to either dump evolution or the Bible don't try to cling to both. God I love this stupid argument. I love to always take the logic of the opposite no matter which side. So now I will go count my monkey bones and try and find that missing link. I think I have it narrowed down to a man's rib bone. Now where could it be. xx

P.S. Right on C4andyGirl you got it right.

For scientists, admitting our mistakes (such as Piltdown Man, or Nebraska Man) allows us to continue our scientific endeavor. If creationists were to admit their mistakes...well, let's just say creationism would no longer be in existence.

I'm an atheist, and I was ecstatic when the Roman Catholic Church permitted a belief (acceptance) of evolution. It meant that Roman Catholicism was now a somewhat logical denomination of Christianity.

    Edit:

Also, most Young-Earth Creationists don't have enough logic to interpret a Bible any ways other than 100% literal.

Is it really that hard to accept? I thought all you people now simply state that evolution is true BECAUSE God created it. Which is still a cop out and a lie...

If God created everything as being perfect, why would it possess the ability or even NEED to evolve? It would be PERFECT and wouldnt need to change.... So, God is either a monumental failure at creating perfect beings, or he doesnt exist.

because it means the part of the bible that says god created man in his present image is WRONG. The ENTIRE basis for Christian teaching is ONE book, that is all they have. So to find evidence that part of that book is wrong is just unacceptable for many Christians.

EDIT: Sure the Bible says "present image". It says that God created man in his present image and placed him in the garden of Eden. It doesn't say that god created single cell organisms with the knowledge that they would one day evolve into multi-cell organisms, then primates, then humans millions of years later. It says that man was created in one day and placed in the garden of Eden and that it was god's most important creation.....a huge giant pack of lies.

To say that the people that wrote the Bible didn't have knowledge of these things and therefore didn't include them in the bible is the same as saying "The Bible was NOT inspired by God". If God was the inspiration for the Bible and the people that wrote the Bible were communicating with God, then why wouldn't God explain this to them? Why would he lie?

how does it not fit? why don't you give us some examples of how it does. evolution is a concept inserted into the scientific community for dispersement into mainstream society, by the king of deception.

The amazing thing about questions like this is that they can easily be countered with "why is it so hard to beleive in an all mighty powerful being that created man about 6000 years ago, without the facade you beleive in, known as evolution?"

People, Christians or non believers don't take the time to understand that "evolution" is a natural occurring process in nature. They automatically think the word "evolution" means "Darwin's theory of evolution" which is not correct.

Education is the key to many of our misunderstandings and problems in the world today, lack of education which causes ignorance.

    Good question!

According to the Bible, Humans were created at about the same time as every other living thing. That's why. This goes against Evolution, where Humans evolved progressively from an ancestral bacteria.
