Squire is a division of Fender....it is a lower level of Fender made in Asia. The brand is more geared towards beginners or value-minded customers. A Fender Standard guitar is made in either Mexico or the U.S. They are very similar, with some differences in parts. The Mexican models are much less expensive and are usually regarded as a great bargain for a Fender guitar.

If you decide to go with a Squire, look for the "Standard" series, not the "Affinity" series. The Standard series is a higher quality guitar.

Contrary to some of the above answers, Squire and Fender are NOT EVER of comparable quality.

Squires ALWAYS have lower quality woods and components and are ALWAYS made at the factory where Fender gets the best price- not necessarily the best quality.

Now, all that being said, Squire is a great entry level guitar for perhaps the first year or 2 of lessons.

That is ONE difference, but also there is a difference in materials and craftsmanship. Play a genuine Fender side by side and you will instantly notice a difference in quality.

Also note that an American Standard is US made, while the Standard (not specifically American made) is usually made in Mexico. The materials and workmanship are different as well... as is the price.

No. Often times they are made in the same factory. There are lots of standard strats that are made overseas. The only difference is the hardware. The standards will have better pickups, tuners, etc. At a fraction of the cost, I love my squier strat!

yes, and the quality of the guitars wood. The foriegn guitars use a lighter wood for the body and neck. This gives a guitar a different sound, now thats just my opinion.

I think the squire edition are signed or promoted by Billy Squire an American rocker from the 70-80's and are Strats (Stratocasters)

That's a big difference. Mexico vs. Indonesia(?). Also, specs. on components(potentiometers, pickups) tuners may be different, also, MDF may be used.
