It's a way to passively act out anger by making people wait. It helps the late person feel important.

Hey ease up on the people who run late. I know I can't stand to be late as often as I am. I do lack in organizational skills, but I was much better at them when there was not so much else going on in my life at once that have been very stressfull. I become too easily distracted. Like just now, I had to stop and stare at my goldfish and wonder what he is thinking about. Is he hungry? Am I running late on his feeding time? Should I wash my hair tonight or in the morning? I should be asleep. Does that whitening rinse that I have been using really do any good for my teeth? I need to wash clothes. Christmas day was alot of fun. I think I am hungry. Ooooo, shoot! I meant to burn a new CD. I think I will do that now.

I don't think it's a psychological reason at all. If you ask me, I think it is just blatant disrespect on their part. Example...I have a good friend. Usually every week she and I will meet for dinner with our kids...if we are to meet at 7 PM, I am usually there by 6:45. She on the other hand will sometimes finally show at 7:30, 8:00 or even later. I have asked her time and time and time again why she is habitually late to everything she does...it is not only our dinners, she is literally late to everything she has planned. Her daughter is never on time to preschool, she is late for work and so on. She never has a really good reason why she is late. It is usually because she mismanages her time or she just takes her time getting ready for things. I think this is one of the worst manners a person can exhibit. If you are going to meet someone, be on time. Last week before the Holiday weekend she and I again had plans to meet for a girl's dinner. We were to meet at 7:30...at 8:45 I will still waiting. I called her cell which she didn't answer and so I finally walked out of the restaurant at 10 till 9:00....as I was pulling out she drove in and started honking at me. I politely waved and went on my way home. She called to ask what was happening and I told her I was no longer going to wait for her. Maybe from now she will be on time, but I doubt it.

Again...I don't think there is a mental reason here, just a lack of respect for the people or meetings or whatever who they are on their way to meet.

    • Agreed! Blatant disrespect is exactly what it is! Not to mention a need for attention. Walk in late and everyone "has to notice". I'm with you. NO MORE.

it is very hard to diagnose a person with a sentance but here are some possibilites:

    1. A need for attention, being late draws attention to ones self

    2. Procrastination, the person puts off the events that lead up to the occasion to the point that leaving on time is impossible this could also stem from OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) where a person may feel the need to double check certian things before feeling it is ok to leave

3.Social Anexity, the person is uncomfortable in large groups and feels that it is better to let all the excitement die down before arriving

Because it's someplace I really don't want to go, and the adrenaline rush of speeding around to get ready takes my mind off of where I have to go. Otherwise I would never go to work.

Some people find it difficult to get organised and to stick to an arranged time. This is e.g. true for dyslexic people.

I think that some people just don't care. I also think that they expect that people will wait for them, regardless of their tardiness. This means they think the world pretty much revolves around them. I HATE people who are late! GAWD! I bug myself if I am 5 minutes late- I am 99/100 times on time! (am I late answering this question?) LOL

They do it for attention. Really they do. Think about it when someone comes in late for work, meeting, etc, everyone is looking at them when they come in.

There's no deep reason behind it, other than the person doesn't have any urgency to be on time, in my opinion. I dunno, maybe their mothers didn't give them enough love or something...
