Having lived in foreign countries, I've found that the best way to learn the language is to immerse yourself into the culture and be willing to take instruction and have a positive attitude. I learned to speak Korean while I was in Korea (oddly enough!) by first learning the phrase "Kapshida!" ("Let's go!") when entering a cab, without asking for a specific destination.

Once I got somewhere where I was totally lost, I got out and began walking around. It wasn't long before a student, wanting to learn English, came up to me and offered to take me to a coffee shop where I met his friends. They were thrilled that I wanted to learn Korean, and for the next 8 months, we met 2x a week and they taught me Korean and I tutored them in English.

But, if it's obviously not possible for you to go to the country of choice, I'd recommend spending as much time as possible with the people with whose language you wish to learn. Learn the culture, make new friends (you won't be able NOT to!) and the language will come naturally.

the best way is to HAVE TO speak it, 24 x 7, in the country. Ideally in an environment where you have no choice, i.e. where you are working and have to interact a lot with clients and/or colleagues.

this will however work best if you have had enough classroom exposure to have enough basics so that you can benefit quickly. Depending on the language maybe 25 hours of class time can be enough, in some cases maybe this step won't be necessary.

Source(s): I speak 4 languages. French mother tongue. English learned reasonably well at school then practiced a lot in the U.S. and UK. German learned solid basics in school and then practiced a bit. Portuguese learned with extended family members and never had any classroom time.

I would say the best way to learn a foreign language is by watching TV on the language that you want to lean. Watch many, TV shows, comedies, and short movies. IT WORKS!

Go to a diffrent country. I was forced to move to El Salvador and I'm learning alot more Spanish. Same thing with my Dad when he was in college. He visited Guatemala for a year. He also met a woman whom he has been married to for 17 years. I knew a lady who had to move to France but she didn't even know how to say "hello" in French but she turned on the TV and kept watching it and when she had a question she'd write it down and ask someone.

Immersion is the best way to learn to speak it. If you want to read, start learning vocabulary from children's books in that language. As you get to more complex books, your experience speaking will help you recognize the more advanced vocabulary in your literature.

immersion. go to a country where they speak the language. they will have schools there, but you will learn quicker because you will HAVE to speak and understand, rather than just take a class and then revert to english.

Learn a little in high school, move to the country, spend time around people, immerse yourself in the culture...

Forget whatever language you know already and start from scratch relating nothing to anything else but itself.

The easiest way to become confused is to translate anything from something else, to English.
