First of all, they give you a DEATH certificate. The undertakers do not normally contact the life insurance company - you will have to do it.
So whomever "he" is, ask him while he's alive, who the insurance company is, and what their telephone number is, and where the policy is.Source(s): agent, 20+ years

Yes, as long as you're the only beneficiary of the policy, you can assign the benefits to a funeral home. The funeral home will then complete the claim form and send it to the insurance company. If the claim is payable, the insurer will pay the funeral home, to the extent that it's due. In other words, if it's a $10,000. policy and the funeral costs $6,500., the funeral home will receive $6,500. and the rest would be sent to you.
