    Quit checking your mail.

Get a service that only allows mail from people you put on a list. (mailwise.com is what we use at work, it is pretty good).

Have more than 1 email account.

Use one only for e-mailing your family and friends, and don't post that address anywhere on the internet.

Create another and use that one for subscribing and signing up for things etc etc. This one will get the spam but it won't matter so much.

Pull the dish down from outside your house, disconnect your phone line into your computer, take any ethernet cables out.

As long as there are people making money from sending spam (or getting a kick out of clogging e-mail servers), spam will continue. One person can't do much.

The only sure-fire way is to deactivate your e-mail account. Though I'm sure that that is not the solution you were looking for. The truth is; spam is unavoidable. As long as there is internet, there will be spam. Sorry to burst your bubble.
