5/8 is the biggest. You have to consider the 4 C's when buying a diamond...Cut, Color, Carat and Clarity. Here's a website to help you understand how to buy a diamond.
Click on the Education tab...this will walk to you through all the 4 C's in a diamond.

You've already been pointed to the blunile site which is very helpful with regard to the criteria which are important in a diamond.
However, don't underestimate the fact that the setting is very important and the style of the ring is as important, in the end of the day, as the diamond(s).
For a practical ring that you'll still have around in a few decades, consider a shouldered design. It makes a smaller diamond look really good and is a much more practical sort of ring.
You may get very good value and a distinctive design from a small jeweler rather than from one of the big chains. And the price is sometimes lower as well.

5/8 is the largest. Depends on the grade and clarity which is best (not cloudy)
