What is going on in the world today?

Over the last 5 years or so, I've noticed people that live in my area are becoming more and more inconsiderate of others. Have we as a socitey lost our manners or any consideration for anyone but ourself? Are we so self absorbed in our own lives, we don't stop to think about the person we just cut off in traffic, because we are talking on our cell phone? or bugged in line at the grocery store. This is absolutely driving me nutts! Everytime I encounter a person I believe to behaving rudely, I will point it out. If my children are with me I make sure I explain to them the reason, I called that person out, and tell them specifically I don't want them to do that to people and it is rude.

I do believe that society is becoming more rude. There are fewer "thank yous" for doors being held open, people act like you owe them a favor when you DO let them in front of you on the freeway...no hand wave as a thank you, people taking 30 items in the 15 items or less lane, people blocking the aisle with the cart when they can clearly see people are trying to get by it....it's all rude and getting more common every day.

Source(s): Having said that, I do believe it is also rude to point out someone else's rude behavior...I consider that sinking to their level.

I'm surprised you've only experienced this turn of culture in the last 5 years.

Actually, the changes started taking place since the early 80's, when parents didn't seem to have time to teach the basic social skills to their kids and let the school system take over.

Two working parents, some with two jobs each, has forced people to use the school and day care centers to raise our kids. And when the kids WERE at home, they would be plopped in front of the TV so they can be "quiet" and "out of the way."

That is why today's society has no social skills - or how to associate acceptably with other people.

Everything they learned was from TV and their friends who also watch TV - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, X-Files, etc.

Yes, it's a sad direction that our society is headed - selfishness, no consideration for others, and general hatefulness.

I disagree that people are becoming ruder because last year I broke my leg and had to use a wheelchair and children would rush to open doors and people would offer to help me shop or put my chair in the car for me and I was amazed by their thoughtfulness. If I encounter someone who is rude, I wonder if they are having a bad day or if they are preoccupied with worries I know nothing about. Your attitude of "calling a person out" without giving them the benefit of the doubt is only going to escalate the rude behavior.

Very nice. I work at a grocery store and can't stand it when people talk on their phones when I'm trying to ring up their groceries. Be more rude! It's ridiculous, and I wish I knew what the cause was.

The bible prophesied thousands of years ago that in the "last days" people would be "lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power;". (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

The good news is that this would happen during the last days of God's allowance of wickedness. Jesus will soon act to destroy the wicked, leaving those who are truly devoted to God on the earth to enjoy life as God originally purposed. If you want to find out more about God's purpose for the earth, I bet you know who teaches the bible in your area, and I encourage you to talk to them. Good job going against the grain and teaching your children how to act. :)

you are right. no one holds doors open for people or opens doors for you when your hands are full. i am so sick of people talking on their phones and not paying attention to their driving! best thing to do is teach our kids that this kind of behavior is wrong.
