Well if you want high traffic to your site then you will most likely have to purchase a real domain. (yousite.com) this can be done cheaply at godaddy.com (10 dollars a year). Unless you have a large skill with computers and software, and decent skill with servers you are going to want a company to host a website for you. A good site for this is lunarpages.com, they are only about 100 dollars a year and give large storage and bandwidth limits. (35GB storage 800GB bandwidth) Lunarpages also registers a free domain with them as part of the hosting plan if you pay a year at a time or greater, you can also purchase additional domains from them for 2.99 a year if you have an open account with them. If you have good knowledge in the subject and want to run a server yourself then Apache is a good program choice, however please note that you are going to have to leave the computer with Apache on all the time and will require a fast Internet line (T1 or greater, although that is still very slow) Once you get your domain and server you are going to need to program the HTML, PHP, or whatever code you want running on your site, if you are hosted through lunarpages then you get about 700 dollars of coffeecup software for free, you and also buy Adobe Dreamweaver.

www.angelfire.com is a free hosting site with page builders built in if you are not familiar with html. It is basically a point and click to make a very basic page. If you sign up there are options for a pay account or free. The free site will give you plenty of space to build the only drawback is they put advertising on the site. But it is a good place to learn and get started building.

Most of the members here gave good suggestions. Using a application that walks you through the process is always a good idea for beginners. One tool I have always suggested, although no wizards, is NVU [nvu.com]. It is a good free WYSIWYG html editor that has been likened to Dreamweaver as far as features go.

Alternatively, some hosting companies [such as mine] offer web authoring software as part of your hosting plan.
