What were some of Louis XVI's most serious mistakes during the French Revolution?

Had he been a more able ruler could the French Revolution have been avoided?

Might a constitutional monarchy have succeeded?

Or did the revolution ultimately have little to do with the competence of the monarch?

    His most serious mistakes were:

Failure to reform his country's economy & paying heed to the suffering of his population

Refusing to let his Swiss Guards pursue the fleeing mob after they had put them on the run. Instead, he commanded the Swiss Guards to lay down arms whereupon the mob killed the Guards & stormed the palace. If he had commanded otherwise, the leadership of the revolution would have been caught & the revolution not turned out so tragic.

The french had a revolution, and as a result, there were a lot of dead french people.

To me, that is progress! Less french people means a happier world!

One of his biggest mistakes was refusing to adequately allow the Third Estate to be represented.
