The previous two Presidents had been more or less affiliated with the Federalist Party. Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican, and he felt that by taking the Presidency he could prevent the implementation of further Federalist policies that he disagreed with. Otherwise he was not too keen on having the job and was glad when it was over.
