Is it legal to record your conversation with other people?

There are recording laws, I know for a fact in Arizona, you only need the permission from one parties being recored. This means, if you are one of the parties, you can record whatever you want. What is big time illegal. Is recording a conversation that you are not in.

It depends on how and where the conversation is taking place and whether or not the other party is made aware that the recording is taking place.
In the US, if it is a telephone conversation, the answer depends on many issues, including what state the parties to the conversation are in at the time of the conversation. There are also federal wire-tapping laws that may apply. You can always record a telephone conversation if you clearly make the other party aware that you are going to record the conversation.
If you are talking about a face-to-face conversation, then generally speaking, if you are a party to the conversation, you can record what you say and what you hear, it doesn't matter where you are or if the other party knows or not.

The question is, is it ethical? If you know the conversation is being recorded and the other person doesn't, wouldn't that mean that you could either lead the conversation in a particular direction to get what you want? Or since you have the recordings, which the other person doesn't know about, whats stopping you from editing them to get the person to say something they never said?

This depends on the state you are in, but generally it is legal to record your own conversations. The rule is at least one of you has to know the conversation is recorded (that's you).
I work for an attorney and our clients record their conversations with spouses and ex-spouses. Very handy bit of evidence when it's admissible (and it isn't always).Source(s): 8 years legal experience

That depends on the state you are in. in some states only 1 person has to know a converstation is being recorded in some states both parties need to know.
