Try your local public library. Most subscribe to databases that include Newspapers. Look at your library's website, or telephone the Reference/Information Department.

The 'free' part (I don't believe) will never universally happen. Try Lexis-Nexis.

The particular newspaper from which you are seeking a particular article may or may not provide free access to their archives.

Another way to get copies of old newspaper articles is by what public libraries have to offer. Every one is unique. Some transfer whole newspapers to microfiche files; some transcribe some of the articles to their websites. Some do both.

Some universities have vast archives, including 'major' newspapers, that are available to the public.

Another strategy might be to contact a reporter from some newspaper and ask what he/she uses to find such articles in their town.
