Trigonometry allows you to compute a distance or angle of a triangle when you know 2 angles and a side or 2 sides and an angle. So, for example, if you know a length of a straight line, and you know the angle from each end of that line to a third point, you can calculate the distance to that point. This allows finding the height of a mountain without going to the top of it, or a distance across a lake or canyon without crossing the lake or canyon.
