I can't watch cartoon DVDs anymore because my DVD player makes the picture too bright. Why is this?

I know it is not the TV because it only does it when I am watching a DVD, specifically a cartoon DVD such as The Family Guy. I tried to watch it the other day, but the picture was too bright to see! It had sort of a white glow, kind of like a glare of some type, but I know it is not a glare. It doesn't affect DVDs that aren't cartoons, except for when I am on the menu screen. Then I can't see the options on the menus becuase they too are so bright that they look white. Is there anyway I can fix this? What could cause it to do that?

Update:

I thought it was the contrast, so I set it to the lowest it will go, but it still didn't work.

The contrast setting on your TV is set much too high.

On some TVs it's called "Picture".

Just set it to half of where it is now.
