As a US resident how do I purchase shares of companies listed on European exchanges?

You should check if the companies you are interested in trade in the US as ADRs or ADSs. If they do, you will save alot on commissions. If they don't, you need to talk to someone on the International desk of your brokerage firm.

The easy way is to look for european companies listed on the various American exchanges. Usuallyt, they have the ADR abbreviation (American Depository Receipt), so some bank or brokerage owns the shares abroad on your behalf.
Another is shop your brokerage firms. Some trade abroad and some don't.

Yes you can. You just need to set up an account with a trading house, TD Waterhouse is pretty good, and let them know what markets you want to have access to.Source(s): www.tdwaterhouse.com
