What is the patent/ Trademark process?

Patent, trademark and copyright are all ways to protect intellectual property.
A patent protects an invention - like the typewriter, or a new medical device, or what have you.
A trademark protects a name and/or symbol used in commerce to identify goods or services - like the name Coca-Cola, or the McDonald's golden arches.
Copyright protects a work, like a book, movie or recording.
There are government web sites which explain more, but if you want to make a filing (especially for patent) I would advise you to get an attorney specializing in the area.

Long, complicated and expensive. You'll need a good patent attorney to guide you through it, though if you go to the US Patent Office's website, they do explain the process.
