When a potential employer asks for references, do they want letters or phone numbers?

    They want a name, phone number and how you know the person in case they want to contact any of them. For example:

    John Smith 555-555-5555 former manager

    Jane Smith 555-555-5555 co worker

    Usually a list with name, phone number etc. However if you have letters of reference from previous employers, include those as well.
