How old were you when you learned to read? How old were you when you became a proficient speller?

I was 1 year, 3 months when I first memorized books, and 2 when I was able to pick up new material, read and comprehend the material, and make intelligent opinions about such material. Is this normal? When did you learn to do the things above? When did you start reading "Adult" books( I don't mean porn, but books deemed adult material)? I was 5. Once again, how abnormal is this?

Update:

For the record, I do not have hyperlexia. I do however have another learning "handicap". I do know that I am ahead of the curve, seeing as I am 14 and have an IQ of 164 WAIS. I was just trying to see how my development compared to others.

I was 3 when I was able to read unassisted, and at 4 I could spell without trouble. I was 7 when I started reading adult books. My sister was reading my father's college text books at 3 and "Lord of the Rings" and The Hobbit" at 4. She reads so rapidly, often a 300 page book would not last more than 30 minutes in her hands, and she is able to remember and fully comprehend what she has read. It is not abnormal that you can read/spell so well at a young age, abnormal, having a negative connotation, implies that something is wrong. It is, however, uncommon.

I could read on my own by the time I was three. I started reading novels just before my eighth birthday. I'm not sure when I learned to spell, though I don't remember ever not being able to do so.

You're not abnormal, just advanced. Children whose parents teach them can usually read by three or four. Most children whose parents don't teach them learn to read when they're five or six. Most children begin reading "adult" novels sometime between twelve and sixteen.

In general, the earlier one learns to read, and the more often one reads well-written material, the better speller he will be. Some people do have learning disabilities which prevent them from ever becoming good spellers, and the people who have learned by the whole-language method usually spell better than those taught exclusively by phonics.

i'm sure you knew before you asked the question that your reading ability was not "normal" in the sense of being average or within the range of what is developmentally expected. it is quite exceptional.

the only children i've known who read as early as you have been hyperlexic. in hyperlexia, the ability to read (and often comprehend) at a very high level, is often (but not always) accompanied by poor comprehension of spoken language and delays in overall communication/socialization.

it is very unusual for children to read before age 3-4. most learn to do so ages 5-6. many do not become proficient readers until they are 6-7.

you are way ahead i urge you to do something with that knowledge. i was late 2 i believe when i spell my first word and then proceed to scratch it into our car in big letters when my parents weren't looking . what can i say i was excited i could spell cat. but i remember every one being ahead of me in that other kids could all spell Dream and i got excited over cat ! my reading was ahead though though maybe just my class. all the other kids were reaching for their Dr.susses who actually lived in a nearby city though already dead connection perhaps . I was reading chapter books by then i loved reading then and still to do today a thousand pages a week . but anyway it was the beginning of first grade when this was happening. though what do you mean by adult books i have this doubt you were reading the same books as your parents . my spelling was never good i gained vocabulary from books not spelling . my spelling is still horrible its a miracle even spell check can figure out what I'm writing .i use to write things for my teachers and have to read it to them so they would know how to correct it. i developed a wonderful oral Reading voice though. what i want to know is what type of math you did in first grade they only touched multiplying nearing the end of the year when i was dividing my favorite operation then and now .people us calculators for that but i enjoy doing it out .also didn't you have the kids in your class to compare to or did you get home schooled but if then wouldn't they have told you what grade level you where on ?

I learned and mastered reading late, in 2nd grade. I'm still not the worlds best speller, but I am at a proficient reading level. But I do have a "Learning Disability" so I guess I don't qualify for "Normal".

ok ...hi! I constantly ought to examine and grew to become into constantly a wonderfully respectable speller ... the reading interest got here approximately first grade and the spelling grew to become into no subject. it sort of feels to have been area of my unique "utility," for want of yet another word. What grew to become into and nonetheless is a subject is the skill or perhaps the interest in comprehending cloth. i come across that i'm no longer interested in fiction of any sort, different than perhaps issues like the youngster's thoughts Ludwig Bemelmans (who wrote "citadel No. 9" and "Madeleine" and "Madeleine in Paris" ... ) reading youngster's books is a progression of my adulthood. while i grew to become into approximately 9, I learn Joan of Arc. That grew to become into an "person e book" and that i unquestionably did no longer like it. Adults have such unusual hobbies! My brother examine very early. i do no longer see you as strange. unusual specific, yet strange no. Cheers!

Well, well well! I am assuming you are intellectual? I only learned to read after my third birthday, but became an excellent (and slightly advanced) speller earlier than most children tend to. But, as I mentioned, you must be intelligent as that is advanced...

I was probably 3 when I learned how to spell. You are ahead of the curve. Do something with your intelligence if you are able.
