Why do they have death penalty but not an assisted suicide program?

Update:

I meant an assisted suicide program in the prisons not outside.

Suicide is banned in any major religion and considered an abomination of God due to the destruction of the temple of God, the body, and the life force within you, a gift from God. Assisted suicide is murder.

However, it is not self-murder to refuse medical treatment for diseases that are painful and untreatable. When the odds of winning a battle are against you and the pain and suffering involved are not worth it, it is understandable that you would refuse treatment and/or medication. A living will is another issue altogether.

A person can and should be able to refuse life-saving treatment under certain circumstances, but that must be regulated and defined by law. I am talking about the balance between pulling the plug and the need to revive someone with potential and the desire for that. There are issues with medical ethics, family concerns, the wellbeing of the person, legal permission, definition of life and spiritual belief.

However, abortion and birth control are not banned by the Bible. Never have been, actually. As far as justice goes, there is the old saying, "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". It also says "Let he who casts the first stone be without sin." The Bible bans murder and the death penalty but does not ban self-defense or justice.

One state does have assisted suicide. If I'm not mistaken it is Montana. The reason it is illegal is because if someone "assists" in a suicide it is not truly a suicide and cannot be classified as such. Its just like the question if someone jumps off a building and is hit by a bullet on the way down and dies did the person who shot him commit a homicide? The answer is yes. It cannot be classified as natural, accidental, or suicide because another person was the actual cause of death. Suicide is not illegal in any state. You have the right to do what you want to your body that is why abortion is legal.

The reason the death penalty is legal is because people have been convicted and have met the criteria to be sentenced to death. Murdering someone alone is not sufficient enough to be sentenced to death. People make it seem like the death penalty is handed out like candy but fail to see there are only certain cases that it pertains to. Things like killing someone under the age of 6 or over the age of 65. Killing more than one person. Killing someone while in the commission of a felony. Killing a peace officer or fire fighter acting in the course of their duty. In the state of Texas there are only six ways to be sentenced to death. I listed a few above. As you can see from above you have to do something more than just murder to be sentenced to death.

Because the death penalty is the forfeiture of the life of a person convicted of a crime, like murder. The law says, if you take a life (under certain circumstances), you will loose yours.

Assisted suicide is helping a person take their own life. Generally, the law looks at suicide as the act of a distraught person (a person without all of his/her faculties). If a person is prevented from committing suicide, he may later realize that he was about to make a terrible mistake. Besides that, there is is family and friends to think about. Even if a person is so miserable that he feels suicide is preferable to living, what about the feelings of his relatives?

A person who assists a suicide becomes an accessory to the crime of attempted suicide. Yes, it is a crime. Taking innocent life, even your own, is a crime.

Theologically speaking, your life is not your own.

Make the two work for you. All you have to do is somehow murder a few dozen orderlies in your sickened state, and you'll get the death penalty. And then in 20 or 25 years, if you're still alive and suffering by then, they'll execute you.

Hm...My intention was humor, but that turned out rather depressing, didn't it? Anyway I completely agree with you; the values of our society are very warped.

Because most people that get the Death Penalty work hard to get it,They've earn it!

Assisted suicide is just wrong. The person wanting to die usually hasen't done a horrible crime. But has just given up on life and needs encouragement to get better.

    Thats just my 2cent!

There is a difference between killing and murder. Murder is an unjustified killing. Killing is justified. It is the arguement that the death penalty is done in defense of society because the crime the criminal committed forfieted their right to life. I do not agree with the death penalty but I do understand the justification or rationalization of it.

Assisted suicide is clearly murder. God gave us free will but it is wrong to play God by helping someone to kill themselves. We may not understand why God allows suffering but to play God and extinguish the life God has given prematurely is immoral.
