Called a gin blossom, WC Fields had a trademark red nose. Over time the exhalation of alcohol through the nose as it is being wasted from your system causes the tiny blood vessels in your nose to become more pronounced giving the red "rum nose". Over many years the nose will also grow more bulbous.

It doesnt happen to everyone, but its mainly because when you drink alcohol it raises your body temp. making your body warm and your face turn red. Depends on how much you drink and how fast you drink it!

It's called erythema, sometimes "gin blossom" and is caused by the capillaries in the face and nose dilating. It can become permanent damage. Asians are particularly susceptible to this because of genetics, and it's sometimes called asian flush.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_flush

Because they are ashamed of drinking.
