why picric acid is so called though it does not contain carboxylic acid group ?

Picric acid is made up of a phenol group, which is a benzene ring with a -OH group. Phenol is a weak acid, which used to be called carbolic acid so I assume because phenol is a weak acid and the fact picric acid is explosive we can assume is has properties like acids and hence got the name.

It isn't like this that only compounds containing -COOH gr are acids. The term acid can be defined in diff.manner.You might have learnt it.Picric acid is nothing but 2,4,6-trinitrophenol.It comes under the class `Phenols`.And phenols are acidic in nature.
