Why are so many people on here critical of one another's use of English?

I see so many answers where the answerer puts down the asker for poor grammar, mechanics, spelling, etc. Unless the question involved proper English, why not just leave it alone?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

You are so right. I personally hate poor english and cringe when I read some of these questions but I feel that it is rude to correct people on here. I also know that 20% of Americans are illiterate. If someone is trying to ask a legitimate question I ignore the mistakes they make, except for the woman who wanted to know how to homeschool her child and she couldn't use correct verbs or pronouns, not to mention her spelling and other errors. That was the one time I said that due to her inability to write correctly it was best if she did not try to homeschool her young child.

I'm not native English speaker (I'm Italian) and then I should be more exposed than others to the risk of mispelling. However I'm always using the free "check Spelling" offered by Yahoo This is helping me a lot to avoid the typing mistakes (that I guess are the main origin of the errors) and this I'm not doing to let people how good is my English but to allow others to fully understand either my questions or my answers. I'm also thinking that's a kind of respect for all the Yahoo's users and I'm really bored with unproper English writing even if it's not my native language.

    Merry Xmas

Depends on the context. A person asking a stupid question and using poor grammar, well that's expected. But, a person trying to act really smart who uses poor grammar, that's just hilarious and deserves to be made fun of. My favorite is when people correct other people's grammar, but mispell something in the process (wait, did I spell "mispell" right?).

EDIT: Sorry guys, I forgot, there are no stupid questions. My bad, lolol.

So many people answered here.Too much competition. But I'm new here ,and so far I haven't seen bad grammar ,mainly because I'm new here, Lol.

But answering with a comment,is much easier ,because it doesn't involve too much brain power, thus laziness and lack of interest or brains to give a correct answer is the case we're talking about here.

Lol, I think I'll copy paste this anytime I see someone making rude comments.

I totally agree with andrea b....because to put down others makes them feel superior.... Some people have to make fun of or feel the need to belittle others to make them feel better about theirselves..... When I'm online I do use alot of the cyber slang, because I'm not here to impress anyone with how great my grammer is...I'm online to relax and have fun .... This is not Spelling101.....If someone makes a typo big deal.... No big deal to me if someone makes a mistake and didn't proof read their posts a 1000 times to find a mistake, when we all understand what it was the writer meant anyway....

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All

Some questions do deserve a bashing because they are so bad, way beyond tolerance, totally unimaginable. Questions with a few typos or basic grammatical errors should be left alone though. I said "a few" because a high number of errors indicates a language deficiency, not accidental errors. You can't cite the informality of any medium to decimate the language, which requires at least some sort of convention that we users need to adhere to to express our thought and understand others' thought.

Because people are ignorant, and they want to feel superior to others. I don't always use proper grammar or spelling on here, because I am tired or I am in a laid back mode, or I just don't care simply. People have said smart ignorant things to me. I don't care simply. I scored in the top 2% in the nation for reading on the ACT's and I have an IQ of 155 and that is from a professional exam not an Internet bs IQ test, so it really doesn't matter. My intelligence is not based on the validity of other people's opinions of me.

Maybe they don't know that there are other languages in the world and that English language is not first language to all people in the world.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too :)

Then what is the point of learning how to properly spell in the first place? I think any intelligent person will put the knowledge they have acquired in the past into good use at LEAST in something like YA

Good point. I guess it's just a pet peeve of some people. I admit it drives me nuts to read or listen to someone that does not use proper grammar.
