"Salaries in South Africa tend to start at between £12,000 and £15,000 (salary data collected Nov 05).

Salary levels will also vary according to employer and sector. More demanding work locations, such as poor weather conditions and strict rules, may offer better salaries. Some companies provide performance-related pay schemes and additional benefits.

Hours of work tend to be long, particularly if you are based overseas. Mining engineers working overseas are likely to be on site for up to three months, followed by a period of two weeks' leave, which can be spent elsewhere.

Whilst conditions on site can be challenging, the work itself is not highly physically demanding.

Due to the nature of the work, self-employment is not an option. However, with a good level of experience in the industry and good contacts, consultancy work is possible.

The majority of opportunities are based overseas. The UK does not offer many traditional mining engineering jobs, with more openings in related areas, such as tunnelling, quarrying and construction.

The industry is currently very male-dominated with a male to female ratio of approximately 90% to 10%. However, this is starting to change.

The need to travel in order to gain experience and develop a career is likely to affect individuals with family commitments. Many mining engineers build up their experience overseas and move back to the UK or emigrate overseas permanently later on.

Working overseas in this role can lead to periods of personal isolation. However, it also offers exposure to a variety of different cultures and communities, which can be a rewarding experience."
