Because in Lebanon, Hezbollah, which is Shiia and had strong, very strong ties <financial and family> to Iran has been attempting a coup against the elected government there. Hezbollah killed the marines who were stationed in Beirut as peacekeepers in 1983.

In Iraq, there is a big problem with the Sunnis, some were followers of Saddam and some are "al Queda in Iraq". The Wahabbis from Saudi Arabia, represented by the al Queda and the Egyptian Brotherhood are competing to lead the greater Muslim world against the Khomeinist government of Iran, who are Persian Shiites.

It is in the interest of no one to back either group across the board. It is in the interest of the countries involved to make sure they are not run over by these revolutionary, fundamentalist Islamicists.

We are not fighting the Sunnis in Iraq. We are fighting anyone who is trying to stop the government that was elected b y the Iraqi people from forming. That means Sunnis especially Al-Qaida, Shiites Militias, ex Bathist party members, and any other group that tries to stop the Government from working. We side with the elected government against anyone that tries to destroy it. As for Lebanon we are not on any-ones side their but the elected governments. Americans could care less if they are Sunnis or Shiites. To us that would be like the Baptists shooting at Catholics. Just plain stupid.

Because the Sunni insurgents are fighting us. The vast majority of Sunnis aren't part of the insurgency, but a small percentage are. They fear the Shi'ites gaining power and paying them back for all the years of oppression inflicted on them. They see the U.S. as propping up the Shia againt the Sunnis. If they needed an excuse to fight Americans, that is as good as any. We support the government in Lebanon because it is a democracy. It just happens to be run by Sunnis. If it stays a democracy and Shi'ites begin to run it, then we'll support them.

It is about freedom , not about race or culture. The last time I checked Iraq was run not by the Sunnis. We are trying to get all factions to live together peacefully.

Its all politics. America's credibility in such matters is all but screwed up. That's all that can be said.

Bush's Iraq project is already a failure.

Long live Iraq. Long live Lebanon.

Probably because they are the most right wing of all the parties ther that there are to support. When America stops trying to impose their politics on foreign countries the world will be a better place. My apologies to the American people but really some of your politicians leave a lot to be desired.

Because the USA is so screwed up, they don't know what to do!

A lot of this is because of their unconditional support of Israel and of course, George Bush is an idiot.

BobW, Hamas got elected in Palestine, that's a democracy, same as in Lebanon. Why don't we support that one?

It's a trick. We are screwing with their heads through deception.
